Three by Justin

A few weeks ago, Justin went with me to a concert at school, a very good concert that had us both extremely enthusiastic and talkative afterwards on the way home. I won't relay the whole conversation, though it was a surprising and fascinating one (C. K. Dexter-Haven has unsuspected depth), but the end of it was that Justin wanted to write some poems. He spent that night with us, and we stayed up together for about an hour and a half, with him dictating and me helping him through the editing process. It was a really wonderful evening, and he wrote three poems that I think are pretty good for a kid of his age.

Justin and Shadow

One blue day, he was born.
He whimpered, "Who are these people?
What are they doing?"
When they brought him home,
Shadow wondered, "Who is that?
And why are they bringing home someone new?
It was pleasant the way it was, and now where will I be?
Will they put me in the streets?"
But now Shadow licks him whenever he is around.

Crocodile Village

There is a village where crocodiles live
It's muddy, and it stinks, but they think it's nice.
Their village is called a swamp
Their dinner is meat.

Wherever they go, they watch for prey
Wherever they leave, there are bones.
Crocodiles live happy lives,
And they die happy crocodile deaths.

Evening Road

The darkness is lying on the road.
When cars come by,
The head lights vacuum up the darkness
And when they pass,
They spit out new darkness.
