"Say, what's the big idea?"

The other night Mamadah, Claire, and I watched Road Show together, which was . . . amazing. This movie has everything. A carnival, escape from an insane asylum, a society wedding, a bride left at the alter, a gold-digging mother, a food fight, daffy rich folks, crafty poor folks, a quasi-insane guy, escaped lions, a love story, racist jokes about blacks and indians, a huge fire and firetrucks, bizarre musical numbers written by Hoagy Carmichael, and more-- all rolled into one movie.

Incredible.

A few favorite quotes:

Hopedale Club: "The rest of your life!" (sign outside the insane asylum)

"Name's Colonel Carlton Carroway-- you've heard of Carroway Seeds? I'm head of the whole corporation!"

"I never focus the camera! Anyone can focus the camera-- I focus you!"

"Your lips are more enticing
Than Grandma's chocolate icing!
Yum, yum, yum!"

(only one of this movie's fantastically strange songs. . . )

We noticed that all of the stock black-and-white-movie phrases were in this movie, mostly snapped out by the blonde, gum-smacking, carnival-owning heroine:

"Say, what's the big idea?"
"Make it snappy!"
"Now just a minute, mister!"
"Where d'ya think you're going?"
"Oh he did, did he?"
"So you're a fresh guy, huh?"

I think I may start incorporating these into my conversation, with the requisite Yankee-esque accent, of course.
