Oh brother.

In an email sent today by the head Arts and Humanities academic advisor, notifying A&H majors that the course listings for next semester aren't finished yet:

"If everybody would just utilize patience, it would be greatly appreciated."

Utilize? This is institutional jargoneese at its worst. Utilize is just a way to make 'use' sound ritzier. And in any event you don't say 'use patience.' The phrase is, quite simply, 'be patient.'

Why do people feel the need to use language to bolster their self-importance? It tires me.
